CREATIVE FORUM
Creative Forum is an independent think tank established by the City of Copenhagen in 2008. Creative Forum consists of representatives from different creative sectors in Copenhagen: cultural and creative industries (both established and new companies), artists with strong entrepreneurship and project experience, fiery souls and leaders of different cultural projects, analytical institutes and educational institutes as well as the three mayors: Lord Mayor Ritt Bjerregaard, Mayor of Technical and Environmental Affairs Klaus Bondam and the Mayor of Culture and Leisure Pia Allerslev.THE TASK
Creative Forum’s main task is to give recommendations to the City of Copenhagen that can strengthen the overall framework conditions for the creative industries. Also Creative Forum is to function as a hearing partner for the City of Copenhagen concerning the conditions for the creative industries. As a sort of cross sectoral trade association Creative Forum collects knowledge and works for improvement of the specific business conditions for the creative industries.A clear identification and overview over the most significant boosters and inhibitors a cross the different creative sectors is a necessary starting point for the concrete recommendations that Creative Forum has developed.
In addition to the general view it is important for Creative Forum to adjust specific problems and recommendations in respecting different sizes of companies, well- or newly established companies, material or immaterial products and private or public funded companies. Issues regarding art, culture and event development with no concrete business aspect are not dealt with by Creative Forum.
DEVELOPMENT AND EFFECT - FOR WHOM?
The strengthening of the creative industries is primarily focused on positively affecting the possibilities of generating development and strong business competences for the artists and creatives in Copenhagen both on short and long term basis.Secondly, this is of great importance for the development of the dynamic environments in Copenhagen and the city’s attraction value for citizens, for companies, for tourists and for the international profile of Copenhagen.
Finally, the Copenhagen solutions can hopefully be of inspiration for development in other Danish cities that have creative businesses at a certain level.
WHAT ARE THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES ACCORDING TO CREATIVE FORUM?
No common national or international definition exists in terms of what the creative industries are. Creative Forum has adopted a definition of the creative sector from Copenhagen Business School’s report “Rammebetingelser for Københavns kreative brancher (2006)” which defines the creative sector as “those that develop and sell experience products based on creative labour.” (own translation). Creative Forum has added this definition to the Danish Entreprise and Construction Authority, which has pointed out 9 creative industries. On this basis Creative Forum has elaborated its definition of the creative industries. These are: Music, dance, theatre, film, video, computer games, press, books, radio, television, architecture, design (fashion, urban design and product design), advertisement, art and creative or cultural events.Creative Forum focuses on private creative companies, but also includes creative companies that are financially supported by the City of Copenhagen. Public artistic and cultural companies residing in Copenhagen with a pure national funding, are very important for the city, but not within the focus area of the Creative Forum. However, this will not prevent the Creative Forum from giving recommendations which overall also relate and affect the national cultural institutions.
